Soch Mental Health

Soch Mental Health is a community mental health promotion initiative aimed at providing the South Asian (SA) community with culturally and linguistically appropriate mental health information. Co-founders of SOCH Mental Health Jasmeet Chagger (RN, MSc) and Maneet Chahal (RN, MSc) are passionate mental health change-markers, trailblazing to put South Asian mental health in the spotlight. The not-for-profit organization aims to empower community members to recognize and accept mental health as an essential part of their wellness through education, prevention, and building resilience.

In 2019, Soch developed, facilitated and evaluated a novel SA Grief Support Group - the first of its kind in the Region of Peel. The changing circumstances caused by Covid-19, particularly the large increase in mortality rate, creates a greater need for this type of program, while making it more challenging for the SA community to navigate an already complicated topic such as grief. Creating a culturally and linguistically appropriate SA grief support group will allow community members to manage their grief in an inclusive space.

The Akaal - South Asian Grief Support Group that will be supported by this award is a virtual, 6-week, closed program that will be offered in English and Punjabi. Akaal in Punjabi means timeless, immortal, non-temporal, and is a foundational element of this support group where participants learn to grieve in a way that we keeps loved ones alive.
