Multimedia Approach to Post-Partum Education & Discharge

MAPPED project has created and rolled out a full bilingual video series—comprising six videos in English and six in French—on postpartum discharge teaching on the Mother-Baby Unit at the Civic Campus of The Ottawa Hospital. Implementation began with the placement of QR code stickers in the Patient Education Booklets—our first step in our PDSA cycle. We then added QR code magnets to in-room whiteboards and common areas as visual prompts to increase visibility and reinforce access to the videos. Together, these steps have created multiple access points to reinforce patient engagement with the educational content throughout their hospital stay.

Our team has employed iterative Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles throughout implementation to refine both the educational content and its delivery. As a final step in this cycle, we rearranged the order of the video playlist based on user engagement to better align with patient learning needs and the flow of discharge teaching.

Knowledge Dissemination

In alignment with our goal to spread this initiative across the organization and beyond, we are preparing to launch MAPPED at the General Campus Mother-Baby Unit. Planning is underway to integrate the same QR code-based delivery system and in-room reminders at that site.

Additionally, we have submitted an abstract to the Canadian Association of Perinatal and Women’s Health Nurses (CAPWHN) Conference, where we hope to present our project and findings to a national audience. We are currently awaiting the outcome of the submission review.
