Availability and Communication | Sherida is passionate about so many things in nursing, and mentorship is one of these. No matter how busy her schedule, she always makes time for mentorship. Whether myself, frontline staff, or other leaders, I can attest to Sherida's passion for mentorship, whether it be helping guide others on career paths or simply providing advice on a difficult situation. |
Problem Solving | From my personal account, I have learned a lot around problem solving from Sherida. Specifically with addressing difficult situations and conflict amongst staff who report to me. From how to effectively communicate with stakeholders, to using a strength-based approached, and how to carry myself navigating such situations as a leader. In one particular situation, Sherida utilized a caring and humanistic approach that I've always strived for, and her guidance has not only helped enhance my approach, but effectively develop other staff as well. |
Use of Reflective Questions and Feedback | Sherida is a deeply experienced healthcare and nursing leader. And while utilizing strong leadership theory foundations i.e. transformational leadership, strength-based leadership, she also is able to use reflection to help elicit a mentee's own insights and growth. Often times in conversation, she helps me frame my approaches in a leadership lens, which has greatly helped me in my role(s) and overall enhance my approach. One particular example is in balancing several of my priorities, and notably with Accreditation. Sherida helped me re-evaluate tasks and relevant resources available, to better address practice and Accreditation specific needs. |
Encouragement | There's nothing that brings a smile to Sherida's face like development and career advancement (aside from building nursing practice). Even for staff who directly report to me, I often recommend them to also pick Sherida's mind for insights. Two specific examples that stand out are a couple of Nurse Educators who report to me who were weighing career options and next steps with personal, family priorities. It's a further testament to Sherida's caring and humanistic/holistic approach to leadership. While a strong leader and advocate for nursing practice, she also provided insight on family and the need to balance but also prioritize personal responsibilities. |
Role Modeling | Sherida is a fierce leader, to say the least. Coming to an organization with a different clinical background, she has had to navigate very complex situations all the while continuing to develop nursing and best practices. With any resistance to change, Sherida takes a very systematic approach; learning the lay of the land and understanding context while standing firm on her perspective and values. I have adapted this approach as well, which translates to effective change management. Regardless of how daunting the challenges, Sherida remains steadfast in pushing through, to the benefit of everyone. A couple of specific examples that come to mind is in working with her on organization initiatives such as RNAO work and Practice Support models. In engaging stakeholders for feedback and collaboration, Sherida role models an approach that I further built upon in my work. |
